Is overthinking good or bad?

Spawned by a recent conversation

Overthinking is often considered neither good or bad as it has its strengths and its flaws like with anything else.

Downsides? Can be an easy slope to depression and bad anxiety and may prevent you from pursuing goals due to your own personal fears that overwhelm you (course, it depends on how bad it gets).

Upsides? Overthinking can help you identify areas for personal growth and make you a more effective decision maker as you can see a situation from multiple angles. It also allows for great imagination.

I myself am an overthinker, but I don't see it as a bad trait because it doesn't control me.

It's a 50/50 thing, depending on the person.

I'm an overthinker but I'm not a chronic overthinker.

When approaching a situation, I plan out all the good and bad in my head in case things go south but I stop myself from going beyond that. Overthinking too much is a waste of my time.

Sometimes, I go with gut instinct and if I'm wrong, I learn from it and let it go.

Varies on the situation. Overthikning can just turn your thoughts into an unhealthy obsession that consumes you and prevents you from obtaining joy.

It can also keep you alive and healthy.
