Title: Of Wolves and Secrets ch 10
Fandom: original work

------

Luciana nodded, understanding the seriousness of the situation. She straightened herself up and continued gazing out the window. It will take a while to beat them, but I feel we can do it. We can end their reign of tyranny. And then start fixing things up after that. Luciana blinked.

The wolf shifter wondered just how many shifter children Echidna Global had tortured before they took her and injected her with Fenrir DNA. How many kids had suffered at the hands of the very organization she used to work for?

She was ashamed of herself, but realized it had been out of her control. But she could take back control of her own life now, once the last obstacles were overcome. Luciana hoped she could one day see her parents again and reconcile with them about her disappearance.

She wanted to talk to them in depth about what had happened.

Luciana heard Amari clear her throat and looked towards the hyena matriarch as Christopher stopped in a parking lot. “This is where I leave the two of you. I will be reconvening with my officers as we think on a plan going forward. We’ll see each other again soon enough.”

Amari undid the seat belt and opened the door to get out as Christopher nodded, Luciana noticed. The wolf shifter even said her own goodbye to Amari as the hyena matriarch closed the door behind her. There was a moment or two of silence before Christopher glanced back at her.

“Oh yeah, before I forget. Amari! Thank you for the help so far!” Christopher called out the window at the other woman’s retreating back. She raised an arm and her fingers bent into a backwards ‘v’ symbol. Christopher then refocused on Luciana.

“Now, where would you like to go next?”

TITLE: Asking a girl out

FANDOM: Harry Potter

A/N I suspect this is a bit over the word limit but it was written as a one shot so...

________

"Harry?" Ron asked as they walked along the hallways of Hogwarts.

"Yeah Ron, what up?" Harry replied. He sometimes wondered why he was still friends with the red haired arse. Ron wasn't so bad most of the time but the less said about his shortcomings the better.

"How do you ask a girl out?"

Harry stopped dead in his tracks and blinked several times before he rubbed the bridge of his nose in frustration. He knew Ron wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed but this took the cake, assuming Ron hadn't already eaten it that is.

"Ron, you just walk up to the girl you fancy and ask her. If she says yes all well and good, if not you tried. You can't really do more than that." Harry said at last.

"Sure must be easy for you." Ron said with a snort. "The boy who has girls throwing themselves at you."

Harry somehow resisted the urge to facepalm. Ron just didn't get it and Harry doubted that Ron ever would. His fame and money really didn’t mean much to him because of the way he’d gotten them. Admittedly the money was nice. Even so Harry was famous for something he really didn’t remember. It was far more likely his parents had done something that fateful Halloween night.

"What's the matter Harry?" the voice of Hermione Granger asked as she walked towards them. "What's the prat done this time?"

"Oi! I'm not that bad." Ron tried to defend himself.

"Ronald, you don't want me to answer that question. You won't like the answer." The bushy haired girl replied with a glare that could freeze water.

For his part Harry was trying not to laugh. It was always amusing to see these two go at each other. They did not get along... at all. Looking between the two Harry came to a decision as he'd been thinking about this for a while and the opportunity was too good to miss. After all he was the son of a Marauder and the godson of another. Sirius would get a kick out of the story later.

"Hermione, would you like to go with me to Hogsmeade this weekend?" the green eyed wizard asked.

Hermione stood still for a few moments before her eyes lit up and she smiled "I'd love to!" she said, stepping forward to give Harry one of her trademark hugs and a kiss on the cheek which left them both blushing before she walked off down the hallway a distinct sway in her hips.

"And that Ron," said Harry smirking at his slack jawed friend, "is how you ask a girl out." with that he spun on his heel to follow Hermione or more precisely her swaying hips. He was, after all, a teenage male.

From a new AU thing (idk how to call it yet)

“Number 16, do you still have your dagger?” as Number 21 asked, the Gunner was reminded that she did have weapons that she didn’t know where they ended up.

But looking around the small white knife was just lying by on a rock, still in it’s little pouch too, or what remained of it. It must have fallen when she blew herself up, which brought the question of where her rifle was too.

She’ll look for it later, if no one else had already seen it.

“I believe I do, why?” she asked, reaching for it.

“We need something to remove these bombs, and I believe that’s the best thing we’ve got that can handle it.”

“We… have to cut ourselves open?” Number 2 grimaced at the sound of her own question, but she didn’t doubt the Scanner’s guidance.

She was just… scared…

A little.

Mostly she didn’t feel like being put through any more pain, but perhaps Number 21 knew how to not make it hurt too much.

Probably she did.

She was their Scanner after all.

“That would be the idea, or rather I can put you three in rest mode and remove the device safely, and you won’t feel a thing.” Number 21 explained, purposefully keeping herself from saying that she could not do the same for herself.

But she was prepared.

Hopefully…

However Number 4 noticed.

“Us three? Why are you excluding yourself?”

The Scanner gave a sigh that sounded like bad news. “I… can’t do that on myself.” she admitted.

“I need to give you instructions so you can safely remove the bomb from my body, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to speak if I’ll be asleep.”

But there was still a little detail she hadn’t told, that would only make things worse…

“You can lower your pain perception at least, for the time being.” again Number 4 unconsciously found out the other issue.

She took a moment to answer.

“I’m afraid I won’t be able to do that either…”

“Why not?” Number 16 frowned, she was the Scanner so she should have been able to manipulate all she wanted, no?

“Normally I should have been able to, but I can’t seem to be able to hack those settings. I fear the virus could have corrupted them, irreparably.”

TITLE: A Crown of Thorns/Chains of Fate

I hate fight scenes

.

Though he did not feel hope in his heart, he could not allow the men to lose hope. Their confidence would be shattered, and they’d allow the golems to enter without a fight. Better to give the men some belief. He sprinted towards the ladder on the wall. His run was cut short when a boulder smashed into it, creating a big dent in the fortification. The ladder toppled to the soil.

Fortunately, there was still another way to gain access to the upper wall. He changed directions, and headed towards one of the undamaged buildings, dashing through an open door. He found a few of his men inside. Some of them were on the ground, wounded. One was missing a leg. Another without his right arm. “Your majesty,” one of the healthy soldiers said, acknowledging him with a bow. “Our forces are divided. There’s a golurk separating our men. We can’t reach the path to the keep itself.”

“I’ll deal with him. Just take care of the men here then report to the keep when the path is clear.”

“But the golurks are too strong. Our weapons do nothing.”

“I’ll figure out a way.”

Two-handing his sword, Lance stepped out back into the open, and turned to his left. There was a flight of stairs leading up to the upper level. He made his way up, keeping his eyes peeled. You never knew when a boulder or a fireball could come your way. He walked up the flight of stairs then turned right. That’s when he saw it. Through the narrow alleyway, he spotted the unmistakable bulk of a golurk, and this one seemed larger than the others. Behind the creature, he saw ash clouds. The smell of burning straw reached his nostrils.

Title: Downfall of the Dragon King

Fandom: SMITE

Based on some really old RP plans that will never make it to fruition. Definitely over the word limit, but it is what it is. I sorta just kept going haha

I also got super sick and couldn't finish this when I wanted. Just pretend it's still Sunday.

Partially inspired by @AquilaTempestas

-----

He finally collapsed, beaten, the ruins of his palace all around him. His palace had served as the battleground between him and the great snake and now served as a monument to his shame.

The crumbling monument of his fading power.

Ao Kuang pushed himself to his hands and knees, pulling himself from a pile of rubble and glancing around warily for signs of his enemy. He could see the area around himself clearly illuminated by the hole in the ceiling, but the battle between deities had destroyed many of the fire lamps he used to keep his palace well-lit.

Now he was surrounded by debris, and outside his immediate surroundings, the palace was dark. His eyes made out movement, finally focusing enough to witness a large snake tail of pure white slithering back into the shadows.

What was she doing? Waiting for him to get back up?

He no longer had the strength to assume his true form but would never admit defeat! He couldn't. He was the Dragon King of the Eastern Seas, and he would not ever submit to another.

He yelled out towards the darkness.

"You cannot hurt a drag-!"

He saw a flash of purple, felt a sharp and metallic impact, and heard one of his horns clatter to the floor a moment later. Only then did the pain reach him, and he screamed and tried to clutch at where his horn used to be above his forehead. The blood from this new wound fell, mingling with and adding to the rest of his injuries.

"I grow weary of your voice."

Her voice was level, still carrying the regalness and elegance she was known for, yet the Dragon King could still hear condescension in her tone. It infuriated him, yet he'd have to bide his time for now. There was little he could do at the moment.

She emerged from the shadows, and the first thing Ao Kuang saw was the glowing emeralds of her eyes, followed by the green jewels she wore. A circlet around her head, with a green jewel in the center of her forehead, and a necklace with a large one just above her chest.

Her auburn hair and ornate yellow sash that folded tightly around her body made her one of the most beautiful goddesses in existence, desirable beyond compare, yet at this moment all he felt was fear.

She walked towards him, her face blank, and he did his best to sneer up at her.

Nu Wa, the Guardian of Heaven, approached him and stared down at him, her green eyes vibrant and her expression cold, unsympathetic. He pushed himself to his feet, fighting through the pain he was feeling to do so.

She always liked to float around in the air, so seeing her walking barefoot on the rubble of his palace was telling. She was always smiling, or laughing, or frowning. She was full of life, no matter which emotion she held, and was known for her limitless kindness.

Her current lack of expression made him exceptionally nervous.

"No. Kneel before me."

Her voice was as cold as her gaze, and it rang around in Ao Kuang's head until he fell to his knees in front of her. He stared up at her, quivering in fear and frustration.

He was the Dragon King! How could he be reduced to this, even by this goddess of creation?!

"What will you have me do now?" he sneered at her. "Apologize? Shall I swear not to harm another living soul?"

She stared down at him unblinkingly, and he glared defiantly back up at her because if he didn't, he'd be shaking in fear.

"Beg," the mother of mankind said simply. He was taken aback. "Beg me for mercy. Beg me to spare your life."

The Dragon King went silent, eyes wide. Nu Wa's face may have been blank, but through her gaze alone could Ao Kuang begin to see her rage and disgust. The five elemental stones orbited her hand ominously, and he felt it wise to obey.

Nu Wa was dangerous. She had come here to punish him for his misdeeds, and if begging for his life was the only way to get out of this alive, he would gladly take it. His pride would be bruised, but it's a trade he would make for his life.

He dropped his forehead to the floor in front of her, throwing his arms out and prostrating himself.

"Please," he begged. "Nu Wa. Guardian of Heaven. Mother of Mankind. Forger of the Wu Xing! I beseech you. Spare my life!"

She was silent.

"Spare me, and I will reward you handsomely! Anything I have, name it, and it shall be yours!"

"Good..." she responded, and her voice had softened. For a moment, Ao Kuang thought that would be all that was required of him, but there was still an undertone of rage in her softened tone that had him frozen still. He hesitantly looked back up and gasped at the look of unbridled fury he was met with.

Her eyes were glowing bright green, shining with unbridled power, and snake scales of pure white were beginning to form on various small parts of her exposed skin.

"You despicable worm..." She hissed out, and her pupils had shrunk to vertical slits, her serpentine eyes revealing her true nature. "When you were slaughtering my people, my children, they begged you for mercy. You were entrusted with their protection. You were entrusted to rule over them. They tried to meet your ridiculous demands. When they couldn't, they sacrificed themselves to you for the sake of their families... and you slaughtered them anyways."

Her voice grew quiet.

"I spared your life," she said. "Last time I was here, I defeated you. Sun Wukong humiliated you. Ne Zha embarrassed you. I assumed your pride's destruction on their behalf would dissuade you. Humble you. To show you the folly of your path."

He opened his mouth to speak, but it snapped shut seeing the elemental stones glow ominously.

"To think, you would ignore every sign the universe was telling you to change your course. Your heedless ambition and destructive actions have thrown the world into chaos. When I found out that your hands were involved in the plot that killed Zeus..."

"I had nothing to do with-"

"There is no point trying to deceive me. I witnessed the truth myself."

Her eyes closed, and a look of pain overtook her features.

"So many of my children have suffered and died due to your actions. Countless lives lost. Families destroyed. All over a wounded ego. Your actions are unforgivable."

She shook her head.

"We are both to blame, Dragon King. I should never have spared your life. I thought Sun Wukong proving himself against you would be a good lesson in responsibility for him. I thought these repeated humiliations would have you stop your foolish ways. That is why I spared your life."

She kneeled down in front of him, and he was again frozen by the revulsion he saw in her emerald gaze. She lifted a hand.

"It is a mistake I will now rectify. You will never hurt another soul."

Amethyst-white scales rippled down her arm to her fingertips, turning her flesh into white snake scales. The white markings that ran up her body glowed a faint white. She reared her hand back, keeping her fingers level with each other.

Ao Kuang eyed her scaly white hand, covered in divine snake scales.

"W-wait-! Please! I'll change my ways! I'll-"

"My people begged you for their lives and you killed them regardless," Nu Wa said, and there was an unmistakable look of vindication on her face. "Now, you can feel what that is like."

She plunged her hand, fingertips first through his chest. It tore right through his skin, barely noticing it was there. Her scaled fingers, harder than steel, tore his heart in half like a hot knife through butter, emerging out from his back, the pure white scales now covered in red.

The Dragon King spoke no more.

Digital Reincarnation chapter 90

---

“They requested the chosen one to watch, this will be a test of trust and friendship.”

The biggest one.

The stubby addressed the people with her. “The guardians wish to challenge you to a fair duel, two versus two, it doesn't matter which of you will participate.”

As long as it wasn’t her.

What were these days? All tests to see if their bonds were strong enough?

Of course they were.

And they will prove it. Over and over if necessary.

As expected, A2 was the first to step in and raise her hand, however when she opened her mouth to speak she was cut off…

From Number 4.

“I will participate.” the Attacker declared, and the way she summoned Unwavering Faith and held the large sword against her shoulder left no way to argue.

“Number 4…”

But the albino ignored A2 for the moment, turning towards Robin. “I wish to prove that despite everything that has transpired between me and Number 2, I am willing to prove that I can be trusted with any task, and that there won’t be any bad feelings between us.”

“That is not necessary.” she already trusted her, even with having A2 close to her.

Well, the rogue would hate her if she ever even dared to think about doing something like that, and to separate them.

Not that she wanted to.

“I appreciate the trust, but it is something I need to prove to you and to myself, for the sake of the entire group, so no one will ever have any doubts again.”

Number 4 paused for a moment, giving a soft smile to Number 2, Number 16 and Number 21.

“When we found ourselves alone, the three of us, I swore I would have done anything to be at their side, and to help them. Now there’s more people, the group has grown, but I want to show myself as the same reliable person I want to be.”

Even despite her happy go lucky, and frivolous personality, she knew when she had to be serious.

“Would that be alright, Captain?”

Missed Sunday again, but it's alright.

Sun Wukong laughed as he swung happily through the trees of this frozen forest. He heard the thunk of icy spears piercing the frost-covered trees behind him.

"On him, Kaldr!"

He could hear the wolf keeping pace with him below, but even in these unfamiliar trees, he was in still in his element. He landed on a girthy trunk and adjusted, using his powerful legs to shoot off in the distance, directly back the way he came. He winked at the blue huntress chasing him as he passed over his head and was gifted an icy javelin flying by his neck as a result.

That one had actually been close...

"Well, never have I heard it said that the Goddess of Winter lacks for aim!"

The chase continued, his pursuers relentless, but unfortunately, far outclassed.

Even if they could catch him, there wasn't much they could do to kill him. He was beyond immortal by any definition of the word thanks to his... mischievous youth.

And yet the will of the Ice Huntress seemed endless. He eventually stopped her pursuit by whacking the base of a tree with his Riyu Jingu Bang, the large oak falling directly on top of her companion.

"Kaldr!" She cried, immediately rushing to where he had fallen.

Sun watched from the treeline, wondering if his impulsiveness to end this had just earned him Skadi's eternal vengeance.

Luckily for them both, the tree shook, and with a deep growl Kaldr pushed up from underneath it. Sun's eyebrows rose in awe as the winter wolf pushed the tree off him, struggling to do so, but managing to do enough that Skadi could get her hands underneath and add her own strength to it. Combined, they made enough space for Kaldr to wiggle out, where he collapsed in exhaustion.

Skadi was at his side, soothing him. It looked like he'd be fine. He thought he had killed the pup, but the wolf had apparently strong enough to lift the weight of an ancient tree singlehandedly.

Sun dropped down onto a tree branch near them.

"He's no ordinary wolf, is he?" he asked casually. Skadi was instantly at her feet, bent on her haunches with a long icy spear in hand. She had immediately fallen into a hunter's stance, standing protectively over Kaldr like a mother wolf defending her young. She nearly growled at him, and her eyes deadly shining sapphires, sharp as glass.

"Easy!" Sun claimed, showing his hands to show he was unarmed. "I mean no harm. I don't even know why you started chasing me to begin with!" He protested.

Skadi lowered the spear when she saw that he was genuine.

"If you want me for a lover, there are far easier ways to get my attention-"

He tensed as he saw a spear of ice heading for him, but she had aimed for where the branch he was on met the tree, and he found himself falling into deep snow a moment later.

He stood up, spitting out a mouthful of snow and grinning impishly at her.

"Point made," he said. It didn't look like she was attacking him seriously anymore.

"You are a threat," Skadi told him blankly, and he felt the smile dropping from his face. He had been treated like this for far too long, by far too many uppity immortals who shared the mindset. "Your power will grow unchecked. Too quickly and too violently. You are rash, impulsive, and quick to anger. Your pride will be the downfall of all of China, and eventually, the world."

"You missed the part where I can also choose to become a force for good. And also the part where my good looks and my charm save the world," he chortled, but Skadi didn't look amused.

"It's better to destroy you now rather than let you be the embodiment of chaos and destruction. I've had more than my fill of impulsive tricksters with an appetite for causing others pain."

Sun groaned. He hadn't sat through countless lessons and lectures with Tao on following the way of the monk just to be invited into this strange land and almost immediately attacked by someone concerned with his apparent destiny for destruction.

"Comparing me to a guy who gave birth to a horse is a low blow, snow fox. What do you know about me, anyway?"

"I know that if your power grows unchecked, and you choose to follow the path of chaos, your inevitable clash with Nu Wa will create destruction unseen for millennia."

He groaned again.

"Aside from that," he amended.

Skadi frowned at him, looking less confident.

"I know you have the cunning of Loki and the immaturity, brashness, and strength of Thor."

"So, only the bad stuff... right, that tracks..."

He resisted the temptation to add the fact that he was far, FAR stronger than Thor. No wonder she thought she had a chance of destroying him, she didn't seem to know his true strength.

Although, her fearlessness was noteworthy. He had long heard tales of the strength of the God of Thunder, victor of thousands of battles and nigh undefeatable. That she thought he was as strong as Thor and hadn't hesitated to try and run him down with full force... that spoke volumes of her indomitable spirit. It spoke of her confidence, and her competence, when it came to protecting her loved ones. Her family.

Sun Wukong found himself intrigued. He sat down across the clearing from her, in a lotus position, having just thought of a much better way to spend this day than preparing for their journey to the Celtic Lands.

"Well, we have to stay here until Kaldr wakes up, right? How about this? You sit down and ask me questions. Anything you like. There's far more to me than what you've heard, and I'll teach you everything you need to know. We'll see if it paints a more complete picture than your prior knowledge. And then, you can judge for yourself. What do you say, snow cone?"

Skadi didn't look amused, but she did lower her spear. Taking a glance at Kaldr, she nodded her agreement and sat down on her knees, unbothered by the snow. The cold never bothered her, anyway.

"I accept your terms," she said, before giving him a cold smirk. "And if I don't like what I hear, you'll find yourself imprisoned in Hel, with a serpent dripping venom in your eyes right next to the last person who thought they'd make a fool of me."

Not gonna lie I'm an idiot, so I'm not too sure what I did, but I won't pry. It's an interesting little piece, I enjoyed reading it, arigato gozairmasu (thank you).

One of the 50 kisses snippets.

---

Two figures tumbled on the ground, a string of curses leaving their mouths as they wrestled to see which one was stronger than the other.

Their friends left long ago to their antics, perhaps annoyed, perhaps tired.

Perhaps they didn’t care too much.

Minutes, maybe hours passed, until finally tired and exhausted Dahlia managed to pin down the Gunner successfully, too tired to respond with enough force to throw her off.

“I win.” Dahlia grinned, leaning down so Number 16 could see it well.

The Gunner ‘s blue eyes rolled. “Do you want a prize?” she asked, annoyed, tired, and panting.

Even her voice didn’t feel like collaborating, as it was too raspy to speak.

“What if I do?”

What left Number 16’s mouth was barely a breath against Dahlia’s own lips.

“Kiss me.” she demanded.

The raven should have known Dahlia would not have been one to back down from a dare, especially since she already won.

And since she was already so close.

She kissed just as aggressively as she spoke.

As her lips crashed against the Gunner’s she didn’t even know that the woman had released her already, too shocked to reply.

And Dahlia knew.

She knew it well.

“Your face looks more red than Number 21’s hair.” another grin, as she stared down at Number 16’s dumbfounded and blushy form.

She hadn’t moved an inch.

“Remember, I win.” with another grin, she scurried off to do her own thing.

The Gunner stayed there a moment longer, a smile on her face.

“No, I don’t think you did.”

Title: Insatiable

Fandom: MHW

---

Fourteen months. Fourteen fucking months of dealing with the poison snaking  inside him, feeling it wiggle just beneath his skin. Fourteen months of keeping his composure in Astera, around meetings, fellow Hunters, and keeping a straight face as if nothing was wrong with the world. He hated it. Maybe the worst of it was getting invited—which was in fact, mandatory—to the Gathering Hub to celebrate pointless events. The smell of cooked food made him gag. Yet to keep up appearances, he had to eat and drink and sometimes dance in a drunken stupor. He hated it. Oh and it gets better. Eventually he’d have to excuse himself to vomit it all back up only to do it all again. For fuck sakes.

Leaning down onto the soggy grass, his red eyes locked onto the silver moon peeking through the canopy. Heh, even the silver pendant was afraid of becoming tarnished by his very existence.

“Will I ever lead a normal life?” he asked the trees. “This isn’t me. I’m not a monster. I’m a Hunter.”

Hunt. That was all he wanted to do but in hindsight, Richard was hunting but instead of ferocious beasts, he now hunted humans. Lifting his blood-soaked hand before his face, a droplet landed on his cheek.

“I wonder if there’s a cure? Am I worth saving after all the people I’ve killed in the name of survival?”

His eyes wandered to the sky and his gaze fell on the Mother Star, the brightest star in the sky. She glimmered brightly, bestowing her light to her subjects and offering protection. Protection, huh? Richard growled and grounded his teeth. What bullshit. No matter what he did, he couldn’t turn back time to the point of infection. Closing his eyes, he expelled a deep breath; what happened in the past stayed in the past and the best thing to do was focus on the future, a future he could carve out one day at a time.

Another kiss mini thing.

---

“This is our chance, let’s give it all we’ve got!”

A chorus of affirmations arose for Rose’s words, this was the occasion to deal a decisive blow to the machines, and it was time to put the plan in action.

As the group was busy discussing and talking, Number 21 felt someone reach for her arm, turning around she met Anemone’s face, as she pulled her slightly to the side.

“Hey.”

Though her tone was calm, her face betrayed nervousness.

Number 21 patiently waited, feeling there was more to this, something the other woman wanted to say.

But instead she was caught off guard as Anemone reached with her free hand to the back of her head, pulling her down towards her so their lips could meet in a quick and gentle kiss, parting merely a moment after, as if she’s never been there.

The Scanner felt her cheeks heat up, her blue eyes searching for an eventual witness.

But hopefully there was none, as the rest of the group kept minding their own business, unaware of what just happened.

Never did she think that Anemone would be so bold to kiss her in front of everyone, so much they were both determined to keep what transpired between them a secret.

At the very least until the mission was over.

And they would be free…

“May this bring you luck.”

As Anemone left her, she couldn’t help but chuckle to herself, quiet, low and bitter.

She traced a hand to her arm, feeling the disease crawling through the artificial veins.

Yes…

She would need all the luck she could get.

Kai tried to climb to his feet but lacked the strength, only managing to prop himself up onto one knee. He was in even worse shape. “You need to run. Now is your chance. I’ll distract them.”

“What? Are you crazy?” Tyson demanded, turning on Kai. “Anything is possible when we work together as a team.” The Dullahan started taking steps towards him, flanked by the other three.

“We’re not all getting out of this place alive,” Kai said tonelessly. “I’ve had time to reflect on my actions and if I’m going to go, I’ll do it on my terms. You need to leave.”

“Kai,” Tyson said, grabbing his arm. “You’re not dying. I’ll drag you.”

“And then you’ll slow us both down. You’ve got something worth living for, Tyson. You still have a lot to offer to this world. You promised Hilary you would return to her and you should never leave a woman waiting.” He tried to crack a smile, but it faltered.

Max rubbed his eyes. “…Kai. Reconsider, please. We need you.”

“You didn’t need me. I needed you.” With a grunt, Kai forced himself to his feet. He swayed to the side, as if he were drunk. He launched his blade and summoned Dranzer. “You have to get out of here.  Don’t throw your life away for me.”

“Kai!” Tyson watched as Kai approached the Horsemen, like a general leading his troops into battle. His shoulders were pinned back, and he held his head high, his strides confident. “We can get out of this together. I made you a promise.”

“And we’ll all die here. I won’t have that on my conscience in the afterlife.” Dranzer sped towards the Horsemen. Kai summoned his bitbeast immediately, Dranzer taking to the skies one last time.
