Oh I've always dreamed of someday going to Russia thanks to the anime, Beyblade and the Russian team were so cool. Though it would be one heck of a long flight. I'd have to fly through either Dubai or go through Singapore to get to Russia which is a shame because technically, Russia is only about 12 hours away from Australia. However, due to extremely low visitors from Aus to Russia, we have to take a long route to get there sigh. What are the tourist traps? What are the must-dos of Russia?2 points -

Mum would love to go to Thailand as she's really interested in that culture. I to enjoy Thai food and such and I'd be interested in visiting Thailand one of these days. So, @Nirianne - what would you suggest for interested tourists? What are the common tourist traps? What should a tourist see that isn't mentioned on the 'must do Thailand' lists on TripAdvisor? What's stuff only a local would know?1 point -

Tom Yum is correct! Thailand is stupidly humid in the summer. It's manageable in the other months but if you're not used to the heat, chances are you'll be uncomfortable most of the time and there's a chance you might (or will) get heat stroke. I'd say the best time to visit Thailand is during our rainy/monsoon months which start from May - October. November and December cools down. Going up North is the best during those times. It gets 'colder' and temperatures are manageable. Our food compared to Malaysia is almost the same, but still very different.1 point

Common tourist traps are going to the Grand Palace... that itself is a trap in itself. Foreigner fees are 500 per person and it goes to the royal coffers. But anyway, there are taxi and tuk tuk scams where they'll say the Grand Palace is closed and they recommend other areas. Those are big scams. Everyone comes here to shop, anyway. We have absurdly a lot of malls, lol. You'd be surprised at the amount of malls sprouting up everywhere! I go to the other temples, Temple of Dawn has a 200 entry fee and it's less crowded than the main one. Close to the Grand Palace is Chinatown packed with cheap eats but it's also packed with people. If you really want the Thai experience, Bangkok isn't it. You'd have to go to other cities. However, if you want to stay in Bangkok, I'd recommend doing river tours; they're quite fun. The true Bangkok experience is going around and eating everything. We have so much food on the streets it's impossible to starve unless you're super nitpicky. And oh, if you're allergic to stuff like peanuts or shrimp or whatnot, then tough luck. Everything is possibly cross-contaminated as allergies aren't really a thing here. Going for authentic Thai massages is a good thing but it's not if you hate getting touched. Though, it helps when you're body is aching all over. Mind you, a lot of things people want to do here will *always* have a foreigner fee and you'll pay double of what locals pay.1 point

Oooh yes, Karelia is hella beautiful!!! <3 After my last year's visit I want to return! To you it may feel familiar Yeah long flights are pain. Same thing about Malaysia — there's no direct flights, one has to go via UAE or Quatar. Oh tourist traps... Moscow is one big tourist trap, I'd say, haha! In fact the places I listed in the "promote your hometown" thread. But I think they're worth seeing still. And for must-dos... I'm not even sure. Like, natives and tourists see the land in different ways, maybe better to consult with TripAdvisor. However if any of you here comes to Moscow I'd take you to those famous places first of all. Like when my friend from Panama visited me briefly for one day, we went to walk down Tverskaya street towards Kremlin and Red Square, then from there walked past the Temple of Christ the Saviour towards my favorite pub Howard Loves Craft to have some great beers in a warm company Oh we have lots of museums also! Like Tretyakov's Art Gallery.1 point

Aye I have, that's going a few years back now, back to my uni days. 'Tis a naturally beautiful country, not the safest place like, but if your with a group and have reliable local guides it's a fantastic experience. I spent the majority of my time at Somkhanda Game Reserve, going on hikes through the reserve, learning about the flora, tracking the wildlife, doing some population tracking/counts. We visited the local villages too (this didn't go exactly to the uni tutors plan), meeting a game farmer and touring then discussing his business (he spent a lot of time trying to promote his other tourist business), sadly those were the low points of the trip, but happily there were a lot more enjoyable parts to the trip. Taking a night watch shift at Camp Scotia was fantastic, you cooked the meal for everyone beforehand in two separate groups and that decided which half took the first night. Although my team won, they opted to take the first night. I even offered to take one of the two worst hour slots at 2-3am or 3-4am, keeping in mind we were on a system of get up and ready for the day at 6am, but the elected to pull straws instead and I got a decent time slot of 12am-1am. It was very peaceful under that starry sky and burning fire. Just had to make sure to keep it alight and keep your eyes and ears open encase of a sneaky nocturnal predator crept in, as far as I'm aware we didn't get a visitor hahaha.1 point -

I only used to visit Genoa and surroundings areas of Ligurian Riviera all three times. Because I used to have a friend who lives there. Now she's not my friend anymore, but that's another story. What can I say. Genoa is fantastic. Has lots of historical places too, and its more "modern" part is nice too. I liked the Porto Antico (with its amazing Acquario di Genova!), old town with its majestic palaces and churches, Piazza Principe station, Piazza di Ferrari and its fountain... Via XX Settembre is a great place to walk (during my second visit my hotel was located on this street). I also used to take part in some celebration once, forgot the name already, but it was about Saint Patron of Genoa or something, it took place a week after Easter. It was a beautiful procession around the cathedral, carrying flowers, statues, banners and stuff. Also masters came from Recco to make the original authentic focaccia - super tasty thing! But even more than Genoa I loved the town of Rapallo. This town truly is a jewel of the Riviera, it feels like an old storybook. Beautiful streets with old buildings, and fantastic coast with a cool castle/fortress... To me Rapallo felt even more cool than highly-advertised Cinque Terre which I used to visit too. Oh, and another beautiful place - Portofino!! I travelled there by the sea. And about Cinque Terre what to say... If you saw Disney/Pixar's cartoon "Luca", you have the idea what it is like, Pixar showed Cinque Terre very authentically there. Even if it's a fictional town, I almost recognized some places! And have some pics: Piazza di Ferrari Castello Canevaro in Zoagli. There a memorial of Greg Lake from Emerson, Lake & Palmer is located. I haven't seen it though - unfortunately it wasn't properly inaugurated at that time yet. Piazza della Vittoria in Genoa. Vernazza, Cinque Terre. A location from "Luca", isn't it? A coast walk in Riomaggiore. Via XX Settembre in Genoa. The coast of Rapallo. Prototype of Porto Corsa from Pixar's "Cars 2". The international company in Rapallo ...wow there's pretty many pics, sorry1 point -

It's a corrupt country and racial tensions are extremely high for good reason (white people are the minority and are not well-liked). I've had friends carry guns to protect themselves from gangs. Some friends in Joberg had to be escorted around with bodyguards. Some of our schools had six metre barbed wire fences to keep the gangs wielding machetes out. Everyone should have a cricket bat under their bed for protection. We do love our country - it's a beautiful place falling part because of racism, corruption and politics and it's only getting worse.1 point -

@Sakura Alexia is our resident Italian! I've been to Rome, Florence, The Vatican and Venice. Venice was awesome, Rome was excellent and heaven for a history fan, and Florence was kinda dull. I didn't really enjoy Florence - a bit too 'artsy' for my liking. Renaissance isn't really my favourite time period either when it comes to history and Florence is basically the birth of this era. I want to go back to Rome. I also would love to go to Sicily and Pompeii. Pisa too. Oh, and Milan of course.1 point -

My hometown is Moscow, Russia. What can I say... if someone ever thought of coming here • Why people should visit. Because it's a big beautiful city with long history and interesting culture? After spending all my 36 years here Moscow probably seems "mundane" to me, but still there are places that blow even my mind - like a recently discovered sakura grove right next to my home. It's a lively city that constantly develops, and it never ceases to surprise. Everyone can find things to their taste here. (Also I live here. ) • Instagram highlights - The things you must do. Hmm. Not sure what Instagram highlights are supposed to be. But things you must do - visit historical center, like Red Square/Kremlin, Arbat, Tverskaya and Nikolskaya streets, beautiful parks like Kolomenskoe and Tsaritsyno (which is basically near my home btw), or VDNKH (huge exhibition area)... Of more modern places there are Moscow City skyscrapers, MCC railway (and how without taking a ride on the metro with amazing historical stations!)... • Things to be aware of. Far not everyone speaks anything besides Russian here, knowledge of English here is below average, unfortunately. But most of the signs are duplicated in English. However if you know me I'd always help you Also in the modern times finances may become a problem - foreign bank cards simply don't work here due to stupid sanctions (as well as ours won't work abroad), and currency exchange is somewhat limited or something as I've heard. And of course one needs to be vigilant here - even if crime rate is MUCH lower now than it was in 90s or even early 2000s, still there are any kinds of people in the streets and metro...1 point -

Holiday Destinations Wishlist
BlueThunder reacted to Dementor for a topic
So, a reimagining of this thread? BTW I thought I commented in that one but now couldn't find it. So let's start anew. Well my first and most desired destination these days is the Netherlands, namely Tilburg, this September, because of Ayreon shows, but so many circumstances are against me so it's unlikely to happen Also I'd love to return to Latvia, to my girlfriend's hometown of Ventspils. But this looks even more unlikely now. Damn politics Another bucket list destination is Malaysia, homeland of my bestie. This seems more plausible (albeit expensive but I could save up), for there still are flights and no visas needed, but my family took a stance that I "won't survive there" due to heat and humidity and very long flight. No reasoning works with them... Besides there, I'm curious about Panama, homeland of another friend of mine. She visited Moscow nearly 4 years ago so now expects me with a return visit Another place I'd love to visit was the UK, and I almost did it back in 2020, even managed to get the visa. But damned covid cancelled all our plans (we were planning to hang out at my friend's house with him and his (then) girlfriend - my aforementioned Malaysian bestie). It's my dream to see London and Stonehenge and maybe visit Wychwood and St. Peter's breweries. However it's not going to happen any time soon as well... also that friend and his girlfriend broke up so I doubt we'd gather at his place like this again. Oh and I'd love to return to Budapest, Hungary. I spent two days there back in 2019 and fell in love with this city! In two days I saw only tiny part of it...1 point -

I gotta say, it's insane the number of people who boycott this game and the people who bought it because 'buying/liking it means you're also a transphobic' which is a boat load of crap. People can enjoy something and support something and not agree with a person's views... Doesn't make them an asshole too. Ugh. Anyways... So, someone did some searching on PC and found a bunch of files that are in the game but not in the release version. DLC maybe? They'd be foolish not to do a DLC. They also found a bunch of unused lines by companions that are spoken when they accompany you on any quest not story-related. So, they did actually plan for your character to take a friend around with you whenever. I really wish this comes to the game at some point. There is also an unused House Points system.1 point -

Sizzling Scenes Sundays

Title: Yuletide Chaos Fandom: Smite . Little did everyone know but Cupid was a cunning evil little demon. Sure, he looked cute and innocent – he had the body of a baby, round innocent eyes, rosy tinted cheeks, and a pair of angelic wings. But behind this cute exterior was the heart of a sociopath. There was a sadistic joy in spreading fake love, and corrupting relationships. Apollo had described him as a serpent once and Cupid wore that insult with pride. Saturnalia was his favourite time of the year because it meant everyone came together on the battlefield. All year long the gods from the different pantheons would fight for the title of best pantheon on the conquest map. It left little time for matchmaking and lovemaking. But Saturnalia made people forget about their grudges temporarily for a festival of fun. And chaos of course. “I do admire your methods, Cupid,” Loki said, readjusting his masquerade mask. The god looked quite dapper in his black suit and cape. “No one expects you of doing anything devious. Especially not in that bee costume,” he added, observing the crowd. Apollo was on the stage playing his lyre and singing at the top of his lungs. Several gods and goddesses were up and dancing already whilst a few remained in their seats watching. Cupid had formed an odd alliance with Loki. Loki was feeling annoyed with his pantheon because they had blamed him for their embarrassing loss at the recent tournament. Loki wouldn’t clarify the details however – he changed the subject when it was brought up – but rumour was it had something to do with split pushing objectives. “Devious? Me? How could you ever think ill of this face?” “That’s my point. It’s always the so-called innocent ones who have dark minds. But enough. Let’s focus on enjoying this party. So many gods all in one place. I say we spread a bit of chaos on the battlefield, yes? What’s Yule without a bit of fun?”1 point -

I was there in 2013, Croatia was great! Plitvica Lakes are just wonderful, as well as ancient Roman streets of Split, and beautiful town of Trogir. I haven't seen Dubrovnik though, people say it's super gorgeous. The only thing that spoiled my impressions was weather: it reached +40°C most of the days, and my hotel didn't have air conditioning, so this sucked greatly. Also the sea was pretty cold so it was impossible to stay in water for too long in attempts to escape this heat.1 point -
